Two years ago, we had an exhibit at our school, really quite memorable. All the students in our grade (back then I was in 6 th ) were sorted into different subjects… I had the luck to be put in 2 nd Language! Mine was German, which I really adored, and so I, along with another four kids were behind the stalls. Our theme was Chriskindlesmarkt. Chriskindlesmarkt was a Christmas Market that took place every year in Nuremberg, Germany. The stalls in the market would be filled with all kinds of culinary delights as well as some rather interesting antiques. My partner and I were in charge of the stall containing to exhibit of prune men; prune men were stick figures made of all kinds of dry fruits but mainly dates and walnuts, attached by a wire to resemble people. The entire class of German students had been given a homework to make two prune men or women each and bring them to school a week before the exhibit. All the other stalls included Bratwurst and Zelten Gebäck being sausages and gingerbread cookies respectively.
The day of the exhibition, my partner and I arranged all the prune men made by our class and rehearsed our lines, which explained the concept of prune men, untill we knew them like the back of our hands. Hurriedly finishing breakfast, we got ourselves tidy and ready for guests. The food stalls looked magnificent and too good to be true! All the cookies were decorated with a sugar glaze and the sausages were crispy golden brown. The students behind the food stalls were wearing chefs hats and aprons to add to the theme. All parents and relatives of all students started arriving and we started off. After about three hours, my partner and I were ravenously hungry. Each of us were with some cookies and veg sausages stuffed into our mouths when we were told to have a lunch break and look through the other exhibits based on other subjects.
The famous Tour de France was in the French classroom. The French classroom was full of drawings of cycles, articles talking about previous winners in French, and in the middle was a desk with an entire 3D plan of the cycle track. The science room had all sorts of facts and diagrams on underwater creatures. My friends were at the exhibit explaining a bit about their topic and giving everyone a handmade bookmark with a fun fact written on it.
While we roamed around taking a look at all the other exhibits I noticed that our seniors had decided to forget their exhibits and were roaming around the hallways aimlessly. I felt kind of jealous that they were able to roam the campus without any teachers behind them. The day passed as I left to find my parents and found them with our relatives. My cousins also studied in the same school. It was a wonderful surprise later when we all ‘accidently’ came across an ice cream shop on the way home. It was a brilliant but tiresome day all the same.
